The American Dream1 essays
The American Dream1 essays It is not uncommon for one to pursue their dreams. For example, students incessantly work with the objective of academic success. Frequently, these students have set certain goals for themselves and strive to reach them. The American dream can be compared to a grade that a student works relentlessly to obtain. This is evidently a goal that one sets for himself/herself. The dream is a grade, not always being easy to achieve, yet attainable through keen determination and hard work. As people migrate across the Atlantic Ocean from foreign countries with a certain goal, they see the Statue of Liberty holding her torch of freedom. Then, each new set of eyes that sees this bold statue is assimilated by the wave of exuberance that sweeps their hearts. After the bewilderment stops, the new immigrants realize that they are about to step foot in America, home of the Majorities of people who immigrate to this country or who are native to this land have a distinct dream of what life will be like in America. Upon painting this original and bold picture in their minds, themes of freedom, prosperity and success all permeate throughout most dreams. By viewing the American dreams of St. Jean De Crevecoeur, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Iola Leroy, and the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, one can clearly notice the differences and similarities among the St. Jean De Crevecoeur called the American dream a positive experience. De Crevecoeur emigrated from Europe to America around 1754. In his eyes, America was a fresh sheet of paper awaiting a new painting of the good life. According to his views, Americans can originate from anywhere and still be called an American. De Crevecoeur believes eyes sought after the American dream, and many found even more. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American with his own goals. Although he was a ...

Usability Testing and Implementation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2
Usability Testing and Implementation - Essay Example e you only need to click home at the bottom of the current page instead of using back arrow on the top left side of the display screen (Barnum, 2010, p. 09). Such kind of pictures is immoral being that the family could find it difficult to discuss the information on the page together. With the intention to display private parts of human beings the web developer hinted that the information on the page best suites adults. However, this is contrary to the information on the page which contains both educative and informative information that would best fit the whole family (Barnum, 2010, p. 17). Considering the number /instances of such vulgar or weirder information that would create a rift between the discussion groups ion family, the number of informative information is above average hence such information that are irrelevant for the page should be removed from the site so that both parents and children could have un- education forum (Jacko, 2009, p. 43). Through the study of the web site (http://www.useit.com/jakob), I realized that most of the information in the site history is vulgar meaning that before a user uploads information they go through the available information to realize the trend so that they follow suit (Jacko, 2009, p. 15). However, the web developer should create some codes to restrict use of vulgar words unless you log in. Another option of solving this through creating user accounts so that private information could information. The good idea with the photo is that by clicking on it you could enlarge it to a wider view unlike the picture in the other two sites which could not be altered at all. Considering the web site (http://www.useit.com/jakob/, users) could be withdrawn from accessing information being that the web page is not designed in a welcoming manner, the font style and color shows unconcern hence users may tend to think that this is an up communing page while it entails a lot of information that would be of importance to

Case study Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Case study - Research Paper Example ng to firing of Ron Johnson, CEO within the first 17 months of operation the company is disturbed by trying to reorganize as it strives to remain relevant which has not been very easy. The company has been in operational for over 100 years. Its YOY revenues showed a 12% decline from USD 3.02 billion in 2012 to USD 2.66 billion in 2Q2013. The reason behind the declining trend is pegged on an unsuccessful strategy to change the business model. The company attempted to replace frequent discounts and promotions that were being offered and this was immediately followed by sharp lower sales, job cuts and high cash burns (Gilbertson, Mark & Daniel 142). The company default probability has sharply risen based on its weaker operating performance. The year probability of default rose to 8.5% from 0.4% in October 2012 showing a 2000% rise. JC Penny is ranked top as the riskiest Company based on the comparison of its 8.5% EDF measure that is calculated to be 101 times the median of the USD department Stores industry sector. This increase in the Companyââ¬â¢s one year EDF is attached to the increases in financial risk or market leverage and its business risks also referred to as asset volatility (Gilbertson, Mark & Daniel 156). Its market leverage is analyzed to have more than doubled in the previous years with current figure estimated to be 69.2% which further affirms its riskiness. The failed attempted transformation of the model by the then company CEO, Johnson resulted into a sudden rise in business risks. The firmââ¬â¢s asset volatility rose to 24.4% from 19.5% between 2013 April and July 2012. From the IFE chart above we realize that the company scores about 2.52 which is almost the normal average requirement of 2.50. This means that the company is internal position is not good because it ought to have above the average (Gilbertson, Claudia, Mark, and Daniel 91). This further retaliate the earlier revelation by the growth ratios that the J.C Company is heading for bad

Position Statements (Outline) - Essay Example Wal-Mart sells Chinese manufactured products due to which local manufacturers have experienced a decrease in demand and this has led to shutdown of manufacturing plants which in turn leads to unemployment in manufacturing sector. i. According to Redovich, when federal agencies conducted a raid on Wal-Mart, they figured out that the organization is hiring illegal immigrants who charge less and work without health benefits (Redovich 41). Due to this the likely hood of US citizens getting a better paying job at Wal-Mart decreases. 5. Wal-Mart is one of the oldest and one of the largest retailing businesses within US and it has provided various benefits to the US economy including: increased tax contribution, increased employment levels, better wage rates, higher amount of benefits, environment friendly operations and higher number of choices of goods for consumers. Importance of reading Essay Example for Free
Importance of reading Essay ?Kids who read often and widely get better at it. This is pretty much just common sense. After all, practice makes perfect in almost everything we humans do and reading is no different. 2. Reading exercises our brains. Reading is a much more complex task for the human brain than, say, watching TV is. Reading strengthens brain connections and actually builds new connections. 3. Reading improves concentration. Again, this is a bit of a no-brainer. Children have to sit still and quietly so they can focus on the story when theyââ¬â¢re reading. If they read regularly as they grow up, they develop the ability to do this for longer and longer periods. 4. Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading, they learn about people, places and events outside their own experience. They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. This learning is important for its own sake however it also builds a store of background knowledge which helps younger children learn to read confidently and well. 5. Reading improves a childââ¬â¢s vocabulary, leads to more highly-developed language skills and improves the childs ability to write well. This is because children learn new words as they read but also because they unconsciously absorb information as they read about things like how to structure sentences and how to use words and language effectively. 6. Reading develops a childââ¬â¢s imagination. This is because when we read our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. When weââ¬â¢re engaged in a story, weââ¬â¢re also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation. 7. Reading helps kids develop empathy. This is something Iââ¬â¢ve only recently realised but it makes sense. As my fifteen-year-old son said to me when we were discussing it, ââ¬ËOf course it does because youââ¬â¢re identifying with the character in the story so youââ¬â¢re feeling what heââ¬â¢s feeling. ââ¬â¢ 8. Because reading does all the things Iââ¬â¢ve mentioned above, children who read do better at school. And they donââ¬â¢t just do better at subjects like reading, English and history. They do better at all subjects and they do better all the way through school. 9. Reading is a great form of entertainment! A paperback book doesnââ¬â¢t take up much space so you can take it anywhere and youââ¬â¢ll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag. You can read while waiting in a queue, while waiting for a friend whoââ¬â¢s running late or during a flight delay at an airport. 10. Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind. This is an important point because these days we seem to have forgotten how to relax and especially how to be silent. The constant movement, flashing lights and noise which bombard our senses when weââ¬â¢re watching TV, looking at a computer or playing an electronic game are actually quite stressful for our brains. When we read, we read in silence and the black print on a white page is much less stressful for our eyes and brains. So there you have it ââ¬â the Top 10 benefits of reading! . Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In todays world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up with the events taking place around us. The various courses and classes being conducted in rapid reading support this belief. The amount of reading one should get through is of course nobodys business. There is no end to it for there is a variety of subjects to read about. The daily newspaper or the popular magazine while it discusses topical issues and raised controversies, it also provokes thought and throws light on human nature. It brings the news of wars, rebellions, organizations, political stances, heroic deeds etc. , together and helps knit a world of some sort. There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying ones longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading -reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of killing time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. Reading, as Bacon wrote in his essay. Of Studies. maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man. Thus a widely-read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view. Literature is a form of art which can cross barriers and if one does not know the language in which a piece of literature is written, one is willing sometimes to learn the language. Even if one does not learn a language one reads the literary work in translation. This contributes to the growth of understanding and tolerance amongst people. Reading also helps one to see the present in relation to the past and the future, and thus develop a historical perspective. Care is needed to ensure that reading does not become a substitute for real life. The moment one ceases to enjoy the ordinary pleasures and happiness of life and is content to enjoy them vicariously through fictional and historical representations, one loses all the benefits of reading and loses contact with life. With the cinema and television taking up a great deal of attention of children, teenagers and even adults, the habit of serious reading is dying out. People are content to read abridged versions. see films, go through illustrated comics and be content. But just as reading should not become a substitute for the joy of living or drive out the other forms of entertainment, other substitutes should not be accepted for the pleasure of reading which lies in the act itself. One may be selective, may be discriminating but no one can afford to shut himself off from this rich and ever-growing world of literature.

The Uncontrolled Ambition of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay -- Macbeth
The Uncontrolled Ambition of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth à à à There is basically uncontrolled ambition throughout William Shakespeare's tragic drama Macbeth. In this essay we will explore numerous examples of this on the part of the two protagonists, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. à Blanche Coles states in Shakespeare's Four Giants that the protagonist's ambition was not the usual narrow, personal ambition: à He has admitted to a vaulting ambition. We have no other evidence of personal ambition except, possibly, his own word in this speech. Onrushing events crowd the thought out of his mind and out of our view. We do have ample evidence of his ambition for his family, ambition for a son who might succeed him. [. . .] We think normally of ambition as a personal thing, but it is not always so. Macbeth's stupendous imagination, as revealed later in the play, gives him a breadth of vision altogether out of keeping with a narrow, personal ambition. (50-51) Samuel Johnson in The Plays of Shakespeare explains the place of ambition in this tragedy: à The danger of ambition is well described; and I know not whether it may not be said in defence of some parts which now seem improbable, that, in Shakespeare's time, it was necessary to warn credulity against vain and illusive predictions. The passions are directed to their true end. Lady Macbeth is merely detested; and though the courage of Macbeth preserves some esteem, yet every reader rejoices at his fall. (133) à In "Memoranda: Remarks on the Character of Lady Macbeth," Sarah Siddons mentions the ambition of Lady Macbeth and its effect: à [Re "I have given suck" (1.7.54ff.)] Even here, horrific as she is, she shews herself made by ambition, b... ...iion of Critical Essays. Dramatic and relevant to a modern audience Essay
Lots of the characters under go personal development: for example Reverend Hale, who at first is all to eager to ââ¬Ëshout witchââ¬â¢ but in the end is very disbelieving. My personal belief is that the events are a testament of how people shouldnââ¬â¢t live in a social structure that is overly tight. A crucible is a metal container in which metals are melted to extract their pure element from the impurities. This can easily be linked to the play: first witches supposedly boil potions in cauldrons and a synonym for cauldron is crucible. Secondly, it has a metaphorical meaning: the society of Salem is being heated and stirred in an attempt to remove the impurities and leave only the pure members of the society. An artificial Noahââ¬â¢s Ark, as it were, however this plan backfires some. Act 1 mainly revolves around Abigail and the girls being caught dancing in the woods. The drinking of blood is supposedly a charm to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail wants to be with Proctor after Elizabeth kicked her out for having an affair with Proctor: ââ¬Å"I know that you clutched my back out side your house and sweated like a stallion when ever I come near, or did I dream that? It is she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out. You loved me then and you do now! â⬠ââ¬â Abigail Proctor is fighting an internal conflict; we know that on one side he wants to be with Abigail because: ââ¬Å"[Looking at Abigail now, the faintest suggestion of a knowing smile on his face]â⬠ââ¬â Stage direction But we also know that he feels very guilty about Elizabeth: ââ¬Å"I mean to please you Elizabethâ⬠ââ¬â Proctor However, he does tell Abigail that he wants nothing more to do with her: ââ¬Å"Abby, I may have thought of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched Abby. â⬠ââ¬â Proctor All the time this encounter has been in occurrence, sexual tension is building in the audience. They are also learning about Proctors and anti-hero characteristics. We learn that his name is not entirely white. He is not perfect, and the same applies to most of the characters, they all have good and bad points. I think there are two important points here. One is that Abigail is trying to seduce Proctor with seductive language, and two: Betty is only pretending to be inert. She would have heard all of this, and that is most likely the reason behind her getting up and trying to jump out of the window. Also in Act 1 Abigail threatens marry Warren, Betty and the other girls against telling anyone anything: ââ¬Å"Let any of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder youâ⬠¦ and you know I can do itâ⬠¦ I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go downâ⬠ââ¬â Abigail It is here that we learn just how aggressive and manipulative that Abigail really is. She was trying to manipulate Proctor and now she is being extremely aggressive and even explicit towards the girls. We can tell that this is a frantic and tense moment on stage by the over average use of exclamation marks and use of short sentences. We can also see physical violence from Abigail as she violently shakes Betty around. Visually this would be interesting for the audience, creating both anger and tension. There is contrast in the loud violence of this moment to the quiet seduction from Abigail before. Act 2 contrasts from the end of Act 1, in the fact that it is a calm and peaceful scene, over the loud fear-driven hysteria of the end of Act 1. Proctor comes home from ââ¬Ëseedingââ¬â¢ his farm late at night, and he sits down to eat, with Elizabeth. From the general feel of the scene we can gather that the common room of Proctors house is cold, empty and unwelcoming. This parallels with the relationship between John and Elizabeth. Thereââ¬â¢s is a great amount of tension between the pair, and they idly make chit-chat at the table, as they feel they need to: ââ¬Å"Proctor: Pray now for a good summer. Elizabeth: Ayeâ⬠It should be noted that it is Proctor who is trying to make conversation; Elizabeth is spoiling his attempts with one-word answers. Proctor is feeling frustrated because Elizabeth is not acknowledging that Proctor is trying his hardest to repair the relationship. He is forever claiming his desire to please Elizabeth: ââ¬Å"I mean to please you Elizabeth. â⬠ââ¬â Proctor I believe that the audience would to be getting frustrated with Elizabeth not forgiving him. The tension in the audience would also rise, due to the complete lack of any sexual tension. Arthur Millers ââ¬ËThe Crucibleââ¬â¢ raised issues that were as relevant in the 1950ââ¬â¢s as they were today. The idea of conformity will always exist. People who define this ideologies and beliefs by which groups of people live will always exist. As will accusations made towards one group from another group, to solve their problem, or help their cause. Arthur Millers play took on some very strong issues, that are still relevant to date, it is one that cannot be ignored because of Millers ability to touch issues and themes that have plagued mankind all through history, and will continue to do so in the future.
